Yes, fans were the reason Spyro: A Realm Beyond exists

One of the most-beloved platformer IPs out there, or at the very least, the most-beloved purple dragon-centered platformer IPs out there, Spyro, finally is getting a new game after nearing a decade of no activity and more than a decade — heck, close to two decades — since the last original game. As you may imagine, fans really helped the project get off the ground.

Studio head Paul Yan spoke with GamesRadar+, in which he discussed how they knew fans wanted a new entry, noting they went to XBOX to tell them their plan and how there’s a “loud and consistent” community and how they want to make the game.

“Every year, every gaming event we hear the fanbase show up, like, ‘when is there going to be a new Spyro title?’ even before we had even pitched this.

When we came up to Xbox and said, listen, here’s our plan, we said, ‘Look, there’s a community, it’s loud and consistent, they know what they want, you’re here to make this game, what else do you need, let’s get this thing going.”

That isn’t to say they don’t love the purple dragon, too. Arguably, while Toys for Bob has been around since the ’90s, we’d argue that the dev found their stride with the toys-to-life franchise, Skylanders, which you may remember as having a Spyro flavor to it. After the game ran its course, they went ahead and made Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

“We love Spyro, love Banjo, love all these types of titles. We’ve been doing this all along. It’s not a new thing that we’re shifting to, but we want to carry that type of experience into the world.

We think that the world needs these types of experiences, and we want to make them.”

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is set to release in spring 2027.
