Most of Bungie didn’t know Destiny 2 was gonna cut support

A large portion of Bungie apparently had no idea that Destiny 2 was on the chopping block until it was publicly announced. Frankly, the writing’s been on the wall to some degree, so we’d suggest taking this rumor with a grain of salt.

Stemming from Forbes’ Paul Tassi, supposedly work continued on as usual for new content, specifically Shattered Cycle. Some teams knew and those teams were “begging” the higher-ups to drop the bombshell at least internally. We assume, Bungie kept it sequestered to those teams to lessen the chance of leaks or rumors spreading before things could go public, as truthfully, a rumor that Destiny 2 was going the way of the dodo would’ve put a lot of pressure and speculation they no doubt didn’t want on their plate.

Layoffs are expected in this matter, but it’s hard to determine when said layoffs will take place and who will be moved from the D2 team to help out with Bungie’s new baby, Marathon.

Similarly, Destiny 3 is simply not on the docket and will likely never see the light of day. Some wondered why it wasn’t being worked on earlier, but Jason Schreier put those questions to rest by noting how much money it would take. Sure, Bungie’s got Sony money, but that can only go so far if the company doesn’t believe in the product, which from our perspective here, is probably the case.

A lot of people have wondered why Bungie didn't immediately start working on Destiny 3 after The Final Shape two years ago. The answer (as it usually is) is how much money it would take

Sony has been scorned by their insistence to enter the live service market and Bungie is burning a $3.6 billion hole in Sony’s wallet that Marathon is not filling.
